Located next to the Kentucky River in Frankfort, Buffalo Trace claims there has been a working distillery on its site since 1787. Operated by Schenley from the 1940s-1980s, it was known as the Stagg distillery, then the Ancient Age distillery, until its new owner Sazerac changed the name to Buffalo Trace in 1999.

In 1992 the Age International brands were sold to Takara Shuzo Co. of Japan. A unique arrangement has remained in place, where the Sazerac produces and distributes some whiskeys for the separate company Age International (Ancient Age, Blantons, Rock Hill Farms, Elmer T. Lee, Hancock Reserve) under one mashbill, and others under its own mashes (Buffalo Trace, Weller, E.H. Taylor, Eagle Rare, Charter).
