Black Maple Hill is a brand started in the 1990s and owned by California Vineyards Inc, or “CVI Brands.” Most of the releases were single barrel, with the first couple bourbons being bottled by Julian Van Winkle III in Lawrenceburg possibly using the same Stitzel-Weller stocks he was putting in his Van Winkle bottles. When Julian teamed up with Buffalo Trace in 2002, he suggested CVI switch to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD) to bottle for them. KBD bottled several Black Maple Hill single barrel bourbons and ryes using their barrels purchased from other producers before bottling the 16 year small batch, and finally a non age-stated bourbon, ending around 2011. In 2014 CVI released a new version of both bourbon and rye, produced by the Stein Distillery in Oregon. From a desirability standpoint, the older the better, with the ultra-rare Lawrenceburg bottles being the most sought after. The Bardstown-bottled ryes are particularly loved by many also; the non age-stated versions are lower quality and not worth fussing over.
