Old Overholt was started as a business in West Overton, Pennsylvania in 1810 by Abraham Overholt, the son of Henry Olberholzer, who had emigrated from Germany and had a family history of distillation. One of the quintessential Old Monongahela labels of Pennsylvania rye, it gradually became one of the country’s most prominent brands, and was able to continue selling whiskey during Prohibition under a medicinal license. The original distillery was closed in 1951, and the whiskey continued to be made in Pennsylvania under contract until the brand was sold in 1987 to the Jim Beam company, who moved production to Kentucky.
