Old Eastwood Bonded 7yr, 1 Quart, 1936-1943

This bottle is interesting in that it was distilled at Heaven Hill and bottled at Stitzel-Weller.
Old Eastwood was a private label brand for Taylor drug stores in Louisville
Kentucky (Taylor Drug stores sold all of their stores to Rite Aid in 1996).

Old WL Weller Special Reserve 7 year Bonded, 1936-1944

This bottle was very likely distilled during the very first year (or 1.5 years) after Stitzel Weller opened on Derby Day, May 5, 1935. It does not have a foil wrapper under the tax strip similar to most of the early Stitzel Weller bottlings. This bottle is taller and thinner than the years that came after. It is an Extremely Rare bottle, and thought to be one of less than 10 still in existence. This bottle is a beautiful marker of history when Julian Van Winkle Sr, Alex Farnsley, and A. Ph Stitzel joined forces to resurrect and build a brand that would change the bourbon world by producing it at a new world class facility.

Old WL Weller Special Reserve 7 year Bonded, 1940-1948

Very similar bottle used by Stitzel Weller for the WL Weller SR line for 20+ years. Since Stitzel Weller opened in 1935, this was whiskey from only their fifth year of production making it very rare. Much of the popularity of Stitzel Weller seems to have come from the Old Fitzgerald brands that didn’t start until 1941 (and didn’t gain mass popularity until several years later). Anything bottled in these first six or seven years of production is extremely rare.

This is an early 12-year. At this point they hadn’t made the distinction between Very Old, Very Xtra Old, and Very Very old Fitzgerald. The earliest 12-year I’ve seen was a 1948-1960, one year before this bottle. Also, note the red tax strip. Even though this bottle is 100 proof, it couldn’t be marked as bonded because the bottled-in-bond period maxed out at 8 years until the law was changed in 1962.

This bottle unfortunately has a torn tax strip, so the distillation and bottling dates are missing. The bottom of the bottle is 1963 so a fill date of ~1963-1965 is estimated. The Stitzel-Weller branded swing is a unique accessory.

Old Fitzgerald Prime 8yr, 86.6pf, “First Edition” Book Box, 1/2 pint ~1964

When Pappy was alive and running Stitzel-Weller he wouldn’t allow any bourbon to be bottled under 100 proof because he didn’t like shipping water around the country, despite many other companies releasing lower-proof editions. Once he died, however, the accountants won out and the Prime line was introduced as a lower-tier offering. This is the first edition, in a neat faux-book box.

Rebel Yell Mississippi Repeal Commemorative, quart, 1966

A special bottling to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition in the state of Mississippi in 1966. Reportedly there were only 200 bottles released, and very few remaining intact. Mississippi was the last state to repeal Prohibition. This bottling was part of the first subsequent bourbon release.

Very Xtra Old Fitzgerald 10yr, 1957-1967

The 10-year old version was called Very Xtra Old Fitzgerald. This one came in the nice gift box, which stained the label red over the decades. I’ve been told the gift boxes were a separate purchase from the bottle, which is it seems random as to why some bottles have them and others don’t.

Very Very Old Fitzgerald 18yr 121pf “Blackhawk” 1951-1969

One of the rarest Very Old Fitzgerald bottlings, this was bottled at 121 barrel proof and 18 years old especially for the Wirtz family of Chicago. The Wirtzes owned (and still do) the Chicago Blackhawks and also run the largest liquor distribution company in the area. These bottles weren’t sold to the public, but rather were given to friends and business associates of the Wirtz family.
